After a failed suicide attempt leaves him partially crippled, Roary (John Savage) begins spending a lot of time at a neighborhood bar full of interesting misfits. Jerry (David Morse) a basketball player with a promising future but who lacks the funds to pay for an operation to rehabilitate his knee, befriends him and for the first time gives Roary some meaning to his life. Helping him along the road to emotional recovery is Louise (Diana Scarwid), a young woman dealing with the handicapped who, in the process, comes to terms with her own limitations. With Roary's assistance, Jerry gets his operation, stars for a semipro team, and earns a shot at the big time. But along the way, he forgets about his friends at Max's Bar, who are hurt by his selfishness. Gradually Jerry comes to know himself better and by the upbeat finale, all of the old friends are reconciled.
